The Organic Chemistry lab features high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) equipment, which allows for the separation of complex organic mixtures. The orbitrap Fusion mass spectrometer, once coupled to the HPLC unit can perform high mass resolution analyses of low concentration samples, identifying both the parent ions and fragmented ions of the separated mixtures. This analytical expertise is partically suited to the study of organic compounds in complex natural samples, such as meteorites and comets, as well as more traditional applications within proteomics and metabolomics.
This news Organic Chemistry lab is equipped with a: Thermo Scientific Orbitrap Fusion, a Thermo Scientific Vanquish UHPLC system, a Thermo Scientific EASY-nLC 1200 system and a PROSOLIA DESI 2D system. With all these new equpiment we expect to be able to do: 1) Separation and identification of compounds within bulk free/soluble organic matter extracts and 2) 2D mapping of in situ free/soluble organic compounds exposed on sample surfaces, for example within carbonaceous chondites or returned asteroid samples
