Space Science World Hoshitori Prefecture(Part1) -Ryugu sample observation experience-

On July 3rd and 4th, 2021, the outreach event "Space Science World Hoshitori Prefecture" was held for the general public at the Tottori City Torigin Culture Hall and the Institute for Planetary Materials on the Misasa Campus of Okayama University.

Tottori Prefecture is one of the most suitable places for starry sky observation in Japan, and the prefecture is working on revitalizing the local economy and creating a space industry starting from the Tottori Sand Dunes.

The PML Group is analyzing the asteroid Ryugu sample delivered to the earth by the spacecraft "Hayabusa2" as a secondary curation facility of the JAXA Institute of Space and Astronautical Science. Based on the activities of the outreach event that we have co-sponsored so far, we have decided to disseminate information to the general public through this event.   

Ryugu sample observation experience event

From the 3rd to the morning of the 4th, we exhibited a panel showing the progress of Hayabusa2 exploration at the Torigin Culture Hall in Tottori City.   In addition, we attempted to remotely control the digital optical microscope and scanning electron microscope installed at the Institute for Study of the Earth Sciences so that the general public could see the asteroid Ryugu sample at the Institute for Study of the Earth.

It was difficult for many ordinary people to see the samples due to the COVID-19 calamity, but we asked 81 people from 31 groups to make reservations and actually remotely control the equipment to observe and analyze the Ryugu samples.

We think it was a good opportunity for people of all ages to come into contact with the cutting edge of planetary material science. This was the first attempt in Japan to open the Ryugu sample to the public, and it was highly evaluated by the visitors.

In addition, this open house is being constructed as part of the CASTEM 24 Remote research environment construction in the national university innovation creation environment enhancement project that the university is currently working on, and we were able to demonstrate the effectiveness of remote control the equipment on VPN Secure network.

There is no doubt that it will be further utilized in future industry-academia collaboration.
